Ask Lambo Part #10

All your burning questions answered by our resident stats export

So firstly yes, I know it's been a very very long time since the last inception of Ask Lambo and for that I must apologise. Generally this section of the site is only of interest to our racing league community, but if you are reading this from outside of the walls then hello! Why not pop over to the forums and say hi!

So onto the stats! ASR Hero Eradicator posed a very interesting question on the forums today that not only opened up a new line of stats I'd never considered, but really had me thinking on what the results could be.

Q: Dear resident stats expert, If you tally up all the kms that have been driven in F1 and GP2 leagues, how far have we raced? And could ASR have effectively driven to the moon or even Mars by now? Thanks! - Eradicator

A: Outstanding question and one that required a fair bit of number crunching. So lets start off with the total KM's traveled. If we take into consideration the circuits, including the modified versions (Bahrain, Silverstone ran in different configurations over the seasons) and the number of race laps completed (take note that we don't count DNF's) we are looking at a staggering 67,562 laps.

Based on the official lap distance of each track including modified versions we reach an eye watering 343,570KM.

So lets put that figure into perspective. Over the course of 14 F1 seasons, ASR members have driven the equivalent of:

  • Driving around the world 53 times.
  • 15,000 laps of the full Nurburgring.
  • Drive around Australia 24 times.

Very impressive and I'm sure people can come up with all sorts of additional interesting comparisons, however to the question have we driven to the moon? Sorry we're a bit short. According to google, the Moon is some 384k away. So only about 40k difference. We could probably knock that off in a season couldn't we?

Q: Which track has covered the most laps and KM's?

A: The answer to this one might surprise, but with 4556 completed race laps the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has the largest completed. A close second is Monaco with 4457 followed by Brazil with 4404. It would seem that tracks with shorter distances tend to have more laps completed which of course makes perfect sense. On the flip side however the track with highest total race KM's is Monza with an incredible 19,968.471 KM's traveled. Second is Albert Park with 19,568.070 KM's which is only a fraction in front of Canada with 19,136.068 KM's.

Q: Which season saw the most laps?

A: This one is a bit trickier to give a clear answer since different seasons have held different race lengths. Over the course of 14 seasons we've raced 20%, 40%, 50% and 100% distances. Putting that aside the season that saw the most compiled race laps is GP1 season 5. Given this had one of the highest driver fields ever and 20 races in total, the number of turned laps over this season was 7488 at an average of 374 laps per race. Second is GP1 season 6 with 7433 races at an average of 372 laps a race. On the opposite side of the coin with the fewest laps is season 1. With only 1569 laps at an average of 83 per race it's easy to forgive this since the race distances back then were only 20%.

Q: Which single race covered the most laps and distance?

A: You might think it would be season 9 since that was 100% race distances, and well....you'd be right. But the most laps and distance aren't shared by the same race. GP1 Season 9, the Canadian Grand Prix saw a total of 693 race laps completed over a race distance of 3,022.173 KM's. On the flip side in the same season the Hungarian Grand Prix had a total of 691 laps, but amazingly a total distance of 3,027.271 Km's. Go figure!

Q: Which single race covered the least laps and distance?

It's seems wrong to keep picking on season 1 but it's unfortunately logical that this stat comes from that seasons. The final race in Abu Dhabi saw just 33 laps completed for a total race distance of 183.282 KM's.

So lets now take a quick look at the top 10 categories:

Awesome work Lambo! Fascinating as always.
Doing a simple 343,000/14 says we do on average 24,500kms each season. So I’d wager 2 more seasons and we make it to the moon, woo!

It’s entirely possible it could be done in one!
      Season 6 had a total of 38,099.070 Km’s traveled.

Of course, then we have to make it back.

      I’m up for the challenge.

I say we aim for the other part of the original question and aim for Mars next.
